Abandoned Igloo Hotel

Mountain behind this time!

igloo hotel city alaska cantwell george parks highway 3

Even in the chilly Alaskan heartland, this isn’t quite what you expect. A giant igloo. Situated on the George Parks Highway, 180 miles out of Anchorage on the route towards Fairbanks, Igloo City as it is known stands out like the proverbial sore thumb. It has become something of a tourist attraction in its own right.

You may not have to guess when the Igloo Hotel was but as the 1970s are generally regarded as the decade that style forgot there aren’t any prizes if that was your first conjecture. Someone, apparently, thought that aping the Inuit tradition of igloo building would be a great idea for a hotel. Whether they simultaneously had the idea to build a giant tepee hotel in a Lakota community is lost to history.

In Australia during the 60′s and 70′s they built BIG things. Like the Big Banana in Coffs Harbour. If you went there on holiday you had to get your photo taken in front of it as proof you’d been.

everything everywhere is writting in English. its not just! :[

Wow haaaa the 70′s great for music, not so much for Architecture. The ice hotel in Sweden though that’s the way to do it.

Such an interesting building. It is a shame nobody feel the need to make something special with it. Sure with the shape inside the acoustic could be great. I feel it it became something like a venue for concert it could be dragging people there more and make it a special place. Hope one day someone will love this building enough and have the money to do something with it.

it’s a singular structure and it could be an interesting investiment, for a lot of reasons: the position, the benefits and the applications of a structure like that can have ..
it has absolutely a great potential but honestly today an “igloo hotel” it’s an outdated idea because, in countries like that, the new reality of the hospitality is the ice hotel. :)

Interesting building. I wonder if it has an intriquing history. It does look like a Star Wars prop left behind. Be great to shoot a sci-fi movie from.
